This is the Shin-kyo, a famous bridge that crosses the Daiya-gawa and belongs to the nearby Futarasan Shrine. Futarasan Shrine was founded in 767 by Shodo Shonin and takes its name from Mount Nantai (Futara-san) which is surrounded by Lake Chuzenji. This important mountain was significant as far back as the Yayoi period when it was believed the kami of the mountain supplied fresh water to the lands below. The shrine itself is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Nikko.
